Chicken is one of the oldest foods in the books.
While research can only go back as far as the written word (or picture), there is evidence dating around 600BC that chicken was one of the most common meals during the middle ages.
A chicken is not just a chicken.
In fact, the further back in history you travel, the more variations you’ll find. Some of these include the hen, red junglefowl, capons, and pullets.
Did you say delicacy?
While chicken is one of the more affordable meats in today’s world, this wasn’t always the case. It was not until the 1800s that chicken became a more common dish. Until then, chicken was one of the more expensive meats, enjoyed only by royalty and the wealthy.
World War II brought about an increase in chicken consumption.
With a shortage of beef and chicken, people turned to the chicken to feed their families. This occurrence during World War II opened the pathway for chicken to adorn many dinner tables from there on out.
Europe took a bit longer to follow path.
Not until the ‘mad cow disease’ of 1996 did European countries increase their consumption of chicken. Until then, beef was the meat of choice.
Chicken is the healthier option.
Compared to red meats, chicken contains nearly three times as much polyunsaturated fat (the good stuff). Besides being healthy, the chicken is extremely versatile. With several consumable parts, this meat is used in a variety of dishes and cooked in thousands of different ways.
